4 Steps To a More Fulfilling Work

Sharing is caring!

Are you ready for a job where you get paid for what you really love?

4 Steps to a more fulfilling work

Why do you wake up every morning? Can you answer this question in a meaningful way?

During the last months I had the chance to talk to hundreds of people and most of them cannot answer this question.

We can be busy every day without ever doing something meaningful. Even worse, most of us go every day to work and we are just “functioning”. We do whatever we do – we call it our job – and (sometimes) we know what we are doing. However, most of us don’t know why we are doing what we are doing. The hamster wheel turns faster and faster. We are just busy and we wonder why we do not have time?

You can stop this game now. Create more meaning to your work.

Here are 4 steps to a more fulfilling and meaningful work.

1. Time to create your own vision

“Your vision of where you want to be is the greatest asset you have” – Paul Arden

Most of the people I know do not have their own vision.

A vision functions as a „north star“, it really inspires. It challenges you out into the unknown, to your next adventure, far beyond your comfort zone.

A vision gives you hope and puts all your latent power at work. It puts everything you do into a bigger, wider context because it shows why you do what you do.

A vision inspires you to focus on what matters. A vision provides clarity for the future. If you have a clear vision of what you want to achieve, you won’t let you distracted on the way.

I believe everybody’s work should be today – even more than ever – driven by purpose. Our workplace should be a playground where everybody can contribute with passion, satisfaction and fulfillment to a greater purpose. This is the foundation of the new way of working, where each of us can feel that our contribution matters! This is my vision.

Before our ideal work and lifestyle can make an appearance, we have to envision it and believe that it’s already ours.

Create, in your mind, a clear and precise vision for what you want. As you visualize what you want to happen in the near future, make sure you are in the picture – looking out to your ideal life through your own eyes.

2. Find your passions. Combine them with your job.

Your passions are evidences. Every time you feel a deep, fulfilling excitement in what you do, you’re doing something that fits your natural design. It is an evidence that you are on the right way.

Your passions make you feel good. They make you happy. If you have these feeling while working towards your goal, you are on the good way.

“Without having a goal, it is difficult to score” – Paul Arden

Your passions are like medicine and environmental protection. The more often and longer you do what you are passionate about, the healthier you are and the more satisfaction you can share with your environment.

Your passions will help you learn more. You do not have to be forced to become better in these areas. You do it voluntarily because you love it. Therefore, in the long run you will only become really good in what you are passionate about. Only by doing what really inspires you will help you to achieve mastery and excellence.

Your passions support you to attract success. People feel naturally while dealing with you that they are getting something they cannot pay for. They get your magic, your “mojo”! These magic touches and connects emotionally. This leads to the fact that they come back to you again.

An enthusiastic person is a strong source of inspiration for others. You encourage others through your living and working example, to work even more enthusiastic.

3. Focus on your strengths

“What you do today can improve all your tomorrows” – Ralph Marston

There are many things you have accomplished so far. Write down a list of everything which you have done in your life which shows something good about you. Anything which you have done, experienced or achieved which can be an evidence of your strengths. It might be that you are responsible, caring, organized, honest, reliable, a team player, a team leader, a person who can bring people together, you take initiative, you follow through on things etc.

So, everything what you have done – have you been involved in a team, led a team, organized an event, set up a business? Have you mentored or coached anyone informally or formally, have you helped someone to achieve a certain result? I could go on – but you get the idea. Write these points down. They are evidences for your strengths.

Concentrate your time and energy on that what you have direct influence on. Focus on the areas in which you have your strengths and you will be particularly rewarded for it. However, you have to know yourself well, especially your strengths. Because your strengths show you which ways you can go. That’s the key to pursue your passion.

4. Create new supportive habits

“Men’s natures are alike, it is their habits that carry them far apart.” – Confucius

Habits have a significant importance in our life. They are deeply rooted in our subconscious mind and influence our behavior and ultimately our results.

We can create new habits with the repetition of an act which means the effort decreases over time and our brain patterns are changing as a consequence. The task or activity becomes easier, or even automatic. The more we do it, the less we think about it.

A fulfilling work, doing what is meaningful, means taking action towards your dreams and goals. It means to do whatever it takes on a daily basis. And especially if you are in the hamster wheel, stepping into your purpose can become challenging for many reasons. You come home and feel tired, you have other priorities today or simply feel overwhelmed because there are so many other things to do. Your lizard brain will find many reasons why you should stay in your comfort zone.

You can make any change in life if you change one small habit at a time.

There are three dimensions of our life where we can create meaningful habits:

Charge yourself physically

Make exercises to get your body moving in the morning. It can be Yoga, or any physical activity which you enjoy. But it should be something you can stick with.

Charge yourself emotionally

Write in your gratitude diary or listen to music. It is important that you feel emotionally good afterwards.

Charge yourself mentally

The best way to charge yourself mentally is to practice mindfulness meditation in the morning.

These habits (rituals) help you to recharge yourself physically, emotionally and mentally, you get the needed energy so that you can focus and do more of what you find meaningful.
